When designing or updating a website there are many factors to consider. You need to select images, choose fonts, figure out how the best navigation layout works, and much, much more. However during these many decisions that need to be made, it is important to put some focus on how accessible your website is to the public. One of the make-or-break accessibility features is how color accessible your site is.

What is color accessibility?

Color is a key factor in any design, but with something as important as a website, you want to ensure it’s used properly. Not only do you want the colors on your website to look good, they should also have good functionality. Color accessibility is making sure your use of color is not hindering the accessibility, readability, or functionality of your website for people with a variety of abilities.

Why is color accessibility important?

Color accessibility is important for everyone, not just people with seeing impairments. Having effective color accessibility can be helpful in as basic of a situation as someone looking at your site on their phone in the bright sunlight – it can be hard to see distinctive differences. It is also obviously important to increase accessibility for those with differing abilities to ensure proper inclusion.

In fact, considering this accessibility feature and additional ones can actually be required by law. If you are a government agency, federally funded non-profit, public higher education institution or a public K-12 school, you are required to meet the Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

While other types of business websites may not have to legally follow this act, there is a set of guidelines that are recommended for websites to adhere to: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1.

Understanding the basics of contrast

Color contrast is important in all types of design, without contrast it is difficult to notice any one thing from another. Typically in web design, contrast is used to highlight important information or signal an action or button. These are all important functions that you want your visitors to pay attention to!

The WCAG ranks success for text-to-background contrast with different levels. AA represents the minimum accessibility compliance, where AAA represents the highest standard.

Checking your contrast ratio

There are tools to help you test out your color ratios and see how accessible they are for a website or other design projects. Go to Adobe Color Contrast Checker and enter the HEX Code for the colors you want to compare. Here you can see if your color combinations pass or fail. In addition, you can adjust the sliders to see how much darker or lighter colors need to be in order to pass.

supplement color with design and function

A website can become less accessible if color is used alone as an indicator. Web designers should incorporate color with other elements such as forms, buttons, titles, etc.

A great and common example of this is when a required field in a form is not filled out, a red notification pops up stating the form is incomplete. In addition, utilizing symbols/icons in addition to colors for things like headers, forms with multiple options, etc can be a great option for distinguishing options (see below image).

The Pantone® Matching System (PMS) are patented, standardized color inks that are my by Pantone Company. Pantone created the first standardized color system that allows for easy color matching. PMS colors were created for print use only and do not apply to screen use.

There are currently 1,867 solid PMS colors in their Formula Guide. These ink colors can be sold to printers either premixed or as a formula that printers can then mix themselves.

RGB is the most commonly used color profile in the world of technology. The RGB color process is where colors are rendered by using combinations of red, green, and blue.

So what is the point of a blog?

Before we get into our top tips for writing and creating a blog it’s important to understand why having a blog can be so beneficial. First, it’s a way to connect with customers and users on your site, it’s your chance to speak directly to them and get out any information you may want. Blogs also have proven to produce 67% more leads per month and increase backlinks to your website. One of the most important impacts blogs create is how it improves your SEO, moving your site from the bottom of a Google search to the top! Now, there’s an entire plethora of other reasons why blog posts are beneficial (read more here) but let’s get started on some tips to make your blog the best it can be.

Your headline is one of the most important part of your blog, without catching the attention of possible readers you won’t have anyone reading your blog! One of the main ways to create a magnetic title is to use words that appeal to readers emotions. People are made to react to their emotions, making them more likely to click on a headline that appeals to them. Another popular strategy is using a list title. List titles get right to the point of what your blog is about and makes it come across as an easy read. Some examples are:

“How to _____ in just X steps,”

“Top X ways to _____”

“X Secrets you Didn’t know about _____”

“X Things we Learned from_____”

These types of titles are intriguing to readers and make them more likely to click and read more!

Subheads serve multiple purposes that can lead to readers spending a longer on your blog. First, subheads break up otherwise long and overwhelming text. Readers who are looking at a blog post are usually looking for quick, efficient answers to their questions. So when they are confronted with a huge block of text with seemingly no organization, they are more likely to leave and find another site that is easier to follow and navigate to the sections they are looking for.

In addition, subheads make the page more visually appealing. Similar to the reasons above, seeing a giant block of continuous text is unattractive and underwhelming. Adding in subheads creates spacing that is easier on the eyes and allows for better organization.

Lastly, subheads can help boost your search engine optimization (SEO). Subheads, when used correctly, can boost keywords that are relevant to your topic. Google and other search engines use headlines and subheadlines to grab key words from to help organize what sites go where with a given search result. So always be sure your subheads contain some key words you’re hoping to be associated with.

We all like free advertising, right? This is why you should always include links to other articles, pages, and forms you have on your website in every blog post you write. The goal is to make people stay on your website, so why not direct them to information or posts that might interest them and get the to further interact with your site?

Internal linking also benefits your SEO. Linking increases the number of pages per visit and time visitors are active on your site. The link itself doesn’t cause boosts in SEO, it is people interacting and clicking it, so make sure any internal links you use are relevant and interesting.

Similar to the importance of subheads creating an appealing look for your blog, images and graphics are key in making your blog stand out. Images help readers to visualize or conceptualize what you are talking about easier, making your whole blog post more appealing. In addition, Google measures the the time that people spend on your pages so additional elements such as graphics and unique typography can make reader linger on your page longer.

An additional plus to including appealing images on your blog is you can use these same images to promote your posts on social media!

Blogs are successful just by having people spend time on your site, but if you have a clear call to action within your post you can achieve more substantial success. Whether your goal is to get emails to sign up for a newsletter, sell a product, use a promotion code, or something else, your call to action needs to be clear.

Make sure your call to action is direct and related to the rest of the blog post. No one wants to buy a custom hat at the end of a blog about hiking trails. Be sure to include relevant links and instructions if readers need to take additional steps to achieve your call to action.

so what exactly is seo?

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the process of improving the quality of a website in order to be more relevant to Search Engines. As a result this will lead to more traffic from search engines, this type of traffic is called Organic Traffic. Having successful SEO on your site generally means that your website will be listed higher on a Google search and therefore be also considered more authoritative than your competitors.

what do I need to know about seo?

The most important thing to know about SEO is the fact that it’s ALWAYS changing! Google and other search engines change their algorithms all the time to make sure search results are always relevant and up to date. While this can make keeping your SEO relevant seem intimidating, there are a few simple steps you can follow to make sure your website will always be on the first page of searches.

tips and tricks!

Improving your loading speed is important for two reasons; one, Google recognizes websites with slow loading speeds and assigns those sites with a lower ranking, and two, people visiting your site are impatient. In fact, visitors are so impatient that 53% of mobile site visits are abandoned if pages take longer than 3 seconds to load.

On the flip side, if you have excellent loading times you are more likely to get users to stay and interact with your site, leading to a higher Google ranking. There are many services you can use to test your loading time, we will provide a list of some free tools at the end of this article that you can use.

In order to keep new and existing customers visiting your website you need to give them a reason to revisit. Keeping your website updated with new information, promotions, images and videos is a great way to keep your site from getting outdated and irrelevant. This also gives new content for Google to read as well.

Stay up to date with trends and styles, the way your website looks can instantly attract or repel potential customers.

We reached out to Josh Erdman, CEO of SMS Digital Advertising, for some additional SEO tips and he stressed on keeping your website healthy. “websites have links and over time some of these links no longer work because the destination page no longer exists. This is called a broken link.” He explained that this creates a terrible experience for the website visitor and that “Google finds broken links and it is counted against you as it hurts your authority. Check that all your links are valid, images are relevant and information accurate.” Josh also provided a tool that you can use to scan your website and report on these broken links (found at the bottom of this article).

As of 2020, 50.88% of internet usage was on a mobile device in comparison to 46.39% on desktops. With increasing usage of mobile devices it’s more important now than ever to make sure your website is mobile compatible.

If your site doesn’t work properly, isn’t aesthetically pleasing, or is confusing as a mobile layout then users are more likely to leave and go to another site. Mobile compatibility can boost or lower your SEO rank by an immense amount.
